How to Choose Bedding for Allergies

If you are an allergy sufferer, the dream for a good night’s rest can seem a distance away. Our bedding can cause allergic reactions, from sniffles to itchy eyes and scratchy throats. Although wall paints can also trigger allergies, and allergens are found throughout the home, it is our bedding which we are most concerned. After all, we spend six to eight hours a night on our bed sheets, snuggled under our quilts. There are definitely many things to consider while buying bed linen and accessories. Here’s how to choose bedding for allergies if you are a sufferer.

How Severe Is Your Allergy?

The very first thing to consider is how severe are your allergies? Do you suffer from mild allergy such as slight running nose every other day, but does not make you tired or prevent you from getting out of bed? Or do you have moderate to severe allergies? Moderate to severe allergies are those that hit you almost daily, and have caused you to miss work or school. Such allergies would require you to consider a number of factors when purchasing bedding, such as the type of fabric and pore size.

Bedding Types

You can purchase hypoallergenic sheets, quilts to bolsters. But what does hypoallergenic mean? Hypoallergenic products by definition have little likelihood of causing an allergic reaction and are generally made of materials not known to allergens. It does not contain an environment for allergens to prosper and grow.

Hypoallergenic Materials

Fabrics made of natural fibres such as cotton, and TENCEL™ Lyocell are naturally hypoallergenic. Bedding Affairs’ bed linen range from Cotton Pure™, Palais Suite™ to Hotelier Prestigio™ are made from Xinjiang’s renown cotton, Supima Cotton and TENCEL™ from Lenzing. TENCEL™ Lyocell is considered to be hypoallergenic due to its moisture-wicking properties. Moisture-wicking fabrics absorb moisture effectively and reduce the potential for the growth of mould and mildew for allergens to thrive. Moisture that comes in contact with TENCEL™ is quickly absorbed into its series of internal capillaries. These capillaries transport the moisture throughout the material eliminating surface moisture.

Bedding created from 100 percent cotton has also been tested for its hypoallergenic effectiveness. Besides our natural bed linen, our mattress protector, quilt and bolster have been treated with anti-dust mite guard. Our bolster and pillow are encased in 100 percent microfiber filling, which are tightly woven and acts as a filter to prevent allergen escape.

Pore Size and Breathability

Pore size refers to the opening in the fabric weave and this can also help protect you from allergens. Pore size is measured in microns, the same way allergens are being measured. Bedding below the pore size of 10 microns is recommended to help you reduce allergies, especially pertinent if you have severe allergies.

Affordability

Last but not least, you must be able to afford your hypoallergenic bedding and accessories. At Bedding Affairs Singapore, not only do we ensure good quality of our products but we also keep our prices are reasonable. We do not maintain any retail outlets to make sure our savings get transferred to you when you purchase our products.
