Ever wondered why your new towels feel soft and fluffy when you pick them off a store. But only after a few washes, they start becoming stiff and hard and no longer soft and comfortable to the skin. Seems that only hotels know the tricks to maintaining the softness of towels. Here are some tips on how to keep your towels soft and fluffy.

1. Use Hot Water Cycle

It’s recommended that you wash your towels with hot water cycles to disinfect the towel. This becomes more important in our COVID 19 world. Washing at 75c is optimum for killing bugs and germs. The heat also swells the fibre and releases the soiling. But you need not go up to 75c for home towels.

The main soiling found on towels is skin sebum (oil from the skin). As it is protein based, you need a cool prewash under 40c to first soften the protein, before washing at 40c or higher with botanical detergent to break down the fats in the towel. 30c to 40c hot water should be sufficient for home towels to kill germs.

Check the care instructions on your towel, especially if it is a coloured towel, which may only require warm water.

2. Things to Avoid and to Add in the Washer

Avoid using fabric softener to soften the towels because it deposits a thin layer of wax on the fibres and decreases absorbency. Also avoid bleach to clean your towels as this will destroy the fibres. One of the most important things to remember is to avoid using too much detergent or soap to wash your towels as excess soap can build up and dull the softness.

Do not overcrowd your washer so it allows plenty of water to wash and soak your towels. If you add a cap of white vinegar to the rinse cycle, it will disperse any remaining soap clinging onto your towel to give you the soft and fluffy feel.

3. Drying Your Towels

Give a shake to your wet towels before drying them in the dryer then pulling them out as soon as they are dry helps to fluff your towels.

Line drying your towels are the best as sunlight has a bleaching effect. This is especially helpful for white towels as it keeps the towels bright and UV rays also help to kill bacteria. If you are using a tumble dryer, pop in a clean tennis ball into the dryer with the towels to help fluff them up.

Avoid overdrying your towel if you are using a dryer as this will cause the towel to be scratchy.
